Howto Install Songbird for Ubuntu
Download Songbird from here
You will get the tar.gz file Current Version
Songbird_1.4.3-1438_linux-i686.tar.gz
Now move the file to /opt folder$ sudo mv Songbird_1.4.3-1438_linux-i686.tar.gz /opt
$cd /opt
Now extract the file using$ tar xzvf Songbird_1.4.3-1438_linux-i686.tar.gz
It automatically create a Songbird folder and extract the files in to it.Change file permissions
$sudo chmod -R 755 Songbird or (chown -R shibu:shibu Songbird)
$cd Songbird
$./Songbird
or$ /opt/Songbird/Songbird
You can add /opt/Songbird/Songbird to your Menu.

i could not extract the file in /opt. says 'Cannot open: No such file or directory' to each item. when it is obviously there. and i have typed the file name in correctly. any ideas as to what the problem is?

use This command for moving your downloaded file to /opt.
$ sudo mv Songbird_1.4.3-1438_linux-i686.tar.gz /opt
if you have no opt folder Create One
with sudo mkdir /opt
after coping you have to extract the tar.gz with
$ tar xzvf Songbird_1.4.3-1438_linux-i686.tar.gz

I had to use "sudo tar xzvf Songbird_1.4.3-1438_linux-i686.tar.gz" but otherwise it worked well. Thanks for the assistance.
Songbird now have a dedicated launchpad repo. I think that is the easiest way to install Songbird in Ubuntu.
