How-To: Change Default Display Manager in Ubuntu 8.04

A display manager is a program that gives a graphical login screen and starts an X server session. Desktop environment KDE comes with Display manager kdm(KDM) and GNOME come with display manager gdm (GNOME).

Some time a user installs two or more desktop environments like kdm and gdm as display managers, and sometimes it's possible for the user to change default display manager . This can be done easily by using the command dpkg-reconfigure .

For example, if you installed KDE then GNOME, and the default display manager remained GDM, if you want change it use the following command : sudo dpkg-reconfigure kdm

The following commands can use for other display managers

dpkg-reconfigure gdm
dpkg-reconfigure xdm

If only one display manager is installed, the command will not respond.

Man page for Baby ( Linux Jock) Having no sex content

BABY(1) USER COMMANDS BABY(1)

NAME
BABY - create new process from two parent processes

SYNOPSIS
BABY sex [ name ]

SYSTEM V SYNOPSIS
/usr/5bin/BABY [ -sex ] [ -name ]

AVAILABILITY
The System V version of this command is available with the Sys-
tem V software installation option. Refer to Installing
SunOS 4.1 for information on how to install and invoke BABY.

DESCRIPTION
BABY is initiated when one parent process polls another server
process through a socket connection (BSD) or through pipes in the
system V implementation. BABY runs at a low priority for approximately
40 weeks then terminates with heavy system load. Most systems require
constant monitoring when BABY reaches it's final stages of execution.

Older implementations of BABY required that the initiating
process not be present at the time of completion, In these versions
the initiating process is awakened and notified of the results upon
completion. Modern versions allow both parent processes to be active
during the final stages of BABY.

example% BABY -sex m -name vishnu

OPTIONS

-sex
option indicating type of process created.

-name
process identification to be attached to the new process.

RESULT
Successful execution of the BABY(1) results in new process
being created and named. Parent processes then typically
broadcast messages to all other processes informing them of their
new status in the system.

BUGS
The SLEEP command may not work on either parent processes for some
time afterward, as new BABY processes constantly send interrupts
which must be handled by one or more parent.

BABY processes upon being created may frequently dump
in /tmp requiring /tmp to be cleaned out frequently by one
of the parent processes.

The original AT&T version was provided without instructions
regarding the created process, this remains in current implementations.

SEE ALSO
cigars(6) dump(5) cry(3)

OTHER IMPLEMENTATIONS

gnoops(1)
FSF version of BABY where none of the authors will accept
responsibility for anything.

NOTES

baby -sex F -name Manju vishnu Dileep

Completed successfully at the St. Joseph Medical Center on
November 2, at 3:31 P.M. after about 20 hours of labour.
New Mom Manju is doing fine and will come home in about 2 days.
More information can be gotten from Dad by e-mail or by
calling the new baby hotline @931-XXXX. Celebrations can
probably begin in about 18 years.

Hacking and Network Troubleshooting tools for Ubuntu Linux

Linux supports tons of tools and utilities for scanning network vulnerabilities, cracking passwords and possibility of intrusions. Please always keep in mind that these tools are not for harm a system, but for protect them.

1. john the ripper

John the Ripper is a fast password cracker, currently available for many flavors of Unix (11 are officially supported), Windows, DOS, BeOS, and OpenVMS. Its primary purpose is to detect weak Unix passwords. It is the most popular password testing/breaking programs as it combines a number of password crackers into one package, automatically detect password hash types. Besides several crypt(3) password hash types most commonly found on various Unix flavors, supported out of the box are Kerberos AFS and Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 LM hashes, plus several more with contributed patches.

2. Nmap (Network Mapper)

Nmap is great and it is my favorite network security scanner. It is used to discover computers and services on a computer network. It is useful tool for Network Administrators for tasks such as network inventory, managing service upgrade schedules, and monitoring host or service uptime. Nmap determine what hosts are available on the network, what services (application name and version) those hosts are offering, what operating systems (and OS versions) they are running, what type of packet filters/firewalls are in use, and dozens of other characteristics. It was designed to rapidly scan large networks, but works fine against single hosts. Nmap runs on all major computer operating systems, and both console and graphical versions are available.

3. Nessue

The Nessus® vulnerability scanner, is the world-leader in active scanners, featuring high speed discovery, configuration auditing, asset profiling, sensitive data discovery and vulnerability analysis of your security posture.
Its detect vulnerabilities on the tested systems such as:

-Vulnerabilities that allow a remote cracker to control or access sensitive data on a system.
-Misconfiguration (e.g. open mail relay, missing patches, etc).
-Default passwords, a few common passwords, and blank/absent passwords on some system accounts. Nessus can also call Hydra (an external tool) to launch a dictionary attack.
-DoS attack against the TCP/IP stack by using mangled packets

4. chkrootkit

chkrootkit(Check Rootkit) is a common Unix-based program intended to help network administrators check their system for known rootkits. It is a Linux shell script. It is better to use from a clean LIVECD. It is listed in the Top 100 Network Security tools released by insecure.org

5. Kismet

Kismet is an 802.11 layer2 wireless network detector, sniffer, and intrusion detection system. Kismet will work with any wireless card which supports raw monitoring (rfmon) mode, and can sniff 802.11b, 802.11a, and 802.11g traffic.

It passively collecting packets and detecting standard named networks, detecting hidden networks. It also detects sniffing programs including NetStumbler, and number of other wireless network attacks.

6. Netcat

Netcat is a computer networking utility for reading from and writing to network connections on TCP and UDP.

7.Tcptrack

tcptrack is a sniffer which displays information about TCP connections it sees on a network interface.

Lot of others are available snort, hping, tcpdump, wireshark, sniffit, nwatch, nast, rkhunter

Linux hosting with Ubuntu VPS

Ubuntu's vast user community and continual development have made it a primary contender on the Linux desktop scene - Ubuntu Virtual Privet Servers (VPS) hosting is also an ideal candidate for maintaining a VNC remote desktop.

As a web hosting solution, Ubuntu has also proven itself to be popular and robust. Built upon the Debian distribution's package management system and "secure by default" philosophy, Ubuntu shares Debian's reputation for stability and reliability.

Linux hosting providers offers ubuntu vps with several recent versions of Ubuntu (including preconfigured LAMP and Ruby on Rails templates). Some versions of Ubuntu have been selected as LTS releases - these versions will be maintained with security updates by the Ubuntu developer community for years to come.

Linux web hosting with Apache2

To install linux web hosting you can install apache2

sudo apt-get install apache2

and put your home page in /var/www folder

Compare Google Chrome and Internet Explorer 8

Google has designed an almost completely new Web browser. In fact, other than the core rendering engine – which is based on the open source WebKit standard of Safari fame – everything in Google Chrome. The current versions of Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer, individual Web page tabs are hosted in a single process , single crashed tab can easily take down the entire browser application. Chrome seeks to eliminate this problem by isolating each tab within its own application process, then leveraging the built-in memory protection capabilities of modern multitasking operating systems to keep code and data in a failing tab from stopping on other processes.

Internet Explorer 8 takes Microsoft's creaking browser architecture and injects it with some much needed life. The sturdier, multiprocess design means that most crashes will be isolated to a single tab, while the new "porn mode" and quick-access tools (Accelerators, Web Slices) make browsing more efficient. IE 8's hefty system requirements could slow adoption until Windows 7 debuts late next year.

LINUX GUI Text Editors

nano
nano is a small text-based (launched from the command line) text editor. It's top on our list for many reasons. A clone of the older Pico editor, nano can be used to easily view and edit files.

gedit
gedit is the official text editor of the GNOME desktop environment. Though not the most glamorous of text editors. It has the basic features like -- spell check, word count and search and replace. Its features can be extended with plugins.

If you prefer KDE, and do a lot of text editing, I would recommend looking beyond the standard Kate or Kwrite applications.

Geany
Geany is a graphical application designed to be lightweight, and install with only the GTK2 runtime libraries as a dependency.

Cream
Cream is interesting, because it's more a set of nice macros than a full-fledged text editor. It is a descendant of the Vi/Vim editors. Cream puts a familiar look on the Vim editor, making it accessible to new users. Basic features include spell check, bookmarks, code folding, and find and replace. Advanced features allow for different keyboard mappings, text color themes, and word completion. Cream is a good choice.

Gobby

Gobby is a collaborative text editor. (It is also available for Windows, OS X and UNIX.) It connects computers on a network . It allows for the creation of multiple documents, dragging and dropping of documents, and has an IRC-style chat interface, so you can discuss any changes in real-time. Originally designed for programming collaboration, group editing of other types of documents is also possible. It's a neat application for offices that have a mix of software platforms.

OLED (Organic LED) will replace liquid crystal display (LCD)

Organic semiconductor or "plastic" LEDs are important because they are much cheaper and easier to fabricate than existing inorganic LEDs (which can be made of compounds of gallium, arsenic, indium, and other inorganic materials). Some inorganic LEDs can convert 47% to 64% of incoming electricity into white light rather than waste heat, but are hindered by high costs.

Organic LEDs' greatest promise is not in lighting, but to replace liquid crystal display (LCD) technology in modern televisions and computer screens. Organic LEDs will be much cheaper, can be made on flexible materials, have a wider viewing angle and color range, and will be more energy efficient than LCDs

How to install Python plugins in GIMP ubuntu hardy

GUI Method

Copy your .py file into the directory .gimp2.4/plug-ins . This is a hidden directory, you don’t see it in the file browser. With Nautilus you can toggle the display of the hidden files with Ctrl-H.

Then make the file executable by right clicking, selecting “Properties” from the menu and activate “Execute” in the permissions tab.

If GIMP was running, restart it.

command line

Enter this:

cp myfile.py ~/.gimp2.4/plug-ins
chmod a+x ~/.gimp2.4/plug-ins/myplugin.py

Restart GIMP

Work With Linux Partitions From Windows

If you have dual-boot Windows and Linux? I think you know about different file systems that the two operating systems used and the difficulty in transferring files between the two. While most modern Linux operating systems can read and write to Windows file systems (NTFS and FAT/FAT32), Windows can’t read or write to Linux file systems (Ext2 and Ext3).

If you want to access your files from both operating systems you could just save everything to a Windows-readable partition is the easiest and safest way

Otherwise you can use the following third party software. I do not issue any guarantee that this will work for you!

Explore2fs, DiskInternals Linux Reader, and the Ext2 Installable File System For Windows.
